Teaching in the age of AI

What the Talis 2024 data tells us about Italian teachers. Mirta Michilli's article in Agenda Digitale magazine

Only one in four Italian teachers has used artificial intelligence in the classroom in the last year. The Talis 2024 data show that schools are strong in educational relationships but still fragile in terms of digital skills and the conscious use of AI.

In a new article published in the magazine Agenda Digitale, Director General Mirta Michilli analyses this paradox and puts it in dialogue with the new ministerial guidelines and the vision of Andreas Schleicher: less superficiality, more depth; less automation, more critical thinking.

The article also focuses on a “pop” decalogue for using AI intelligently in schools, ten rules that are easy to understand and difficult to ignore: do not confuse doing with learning, keep the basics solid, use AI with a clear educational purpose, remember that assessment remains human and that the teacher is always responsible.

A useful read for teachers, managers and public decision-makers, but also for anyone who believes that the challenge of AI in schools is not technical, but cultural and pedagogical.

Talis data
Italian teachers and AI: experts in relationships, poor in tech
Talis 2024 data shows that only a quarter of Italian teachers use artificial intelligence in the classroom. The survey reveals high interpersonal skills but a lack of digital training, while new guidelines redefine the role of technology in teaching.
