AI and sustainability at the heart of teacher training

The kick-off meeting of STEAMedge (STEAM empowerment for Educators through sustainability and the use of emerging tEchnologies), the European project that aims to innovate secondary school teacher training by integrating emerging technologies and sustainability, is currently underway in Athens.

The two-day meeting (16 and 17 November), hosted by the Hellenic Open University, the project coordinator, brings together universities, schools and educational networks from six European countries to define the operational architecture of the initiative, which will run until 2028 and is funded by the European Commission through the Erasmus + KA2 (Teacher Academies) programme.

The Fondazione Mondo Digitale will be represented by project manager Annaleda Mazzucato, who will take part in co-design workshops dedicated to defining the STEAMedge skills framework and the model for integrating artificial intelligence into teaching.

Emerging technologies and dual transition

STEAMedge was created to accompany the dual digital and green transition promoted by the European Union. At the heart of the project are:

  • integration of AI, IoT and drones into educational pathways
  • development of transdisciplinary Steam skills
  • focus on inclusion, equity and gender equality
  • micro-credentials and personalised professional development pathways

During the meeting, the partners are working on the structure of the Competence Framework, the design of the virtual learning environment (VLE) and the roadmap for the first experimental activities.

For the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, STEAMedge represents a further step in the construction of a European teacher training ecosystem capable of combining technological innovation, sustainability and systemic impact.
