Little Orange Man

It surely isn’t the first time that she has organized a local digital literacy course. In fact, Cecilia Stajano [@CStajano] has organized 13 editions of Grandparents on the Internet and is currently organizing the pilot courses with the Poste Italiane Italian Postal Service. Nonetheless, whenever she receives e-mails from course participants, it’s always a great satisfaction!

Now, she has received an e-mail from Grandpa Franco (68) who halfway through his course (7 lessons out of 15) has decided to make a list of all the things that he has learnt:

I have learnt to turn on a computer, insert a password, open a programme, use a keyboard and capital letters, the @ sign, etc.

I have learnt to access my e-mails, send an e-mail and use Google and Google Maps.

We have seen how to transfer a photo from a camera to a computer with a USB cable or use the same cable to listen to music on a computer. We have seen how to use CDs and watch movies. We also learned how to eliminate photos from a camera and put them in the trash.

We have navigated on the torrentz 4shared music sites and consulted the sites of Telecom, Vodafone e Wind to see their offers.

I navigated with Google Maps and the little orange man to visit interesting places.

And we have also learnt how to copy, paste and select files.

Franco is taking the Grandparents on the Internet at the Post Office course in Mantua, which was conceived to help elders navigate the web and learn more about new communication technology. Poste Italiane opted for the Grandparents on the Internet Model developed by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale to promote its digital literacy pilot course in six cities: Ascoli, Asti, Mantua, Naples, Palermo and Rome.
