PariPasso: Inquiry and AI in the second webinar with Rizzoli Education
The second event in the series on augmented teaching, promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale as part of the PariPasso programme by Rizzoli Education, explored how artificial intelligence can enhance classroom research. The meeting focused on the Inquiry method and the critical use of AI to transform students into “digital investigators” capable of navigating the complexity of contemporary information.
AI as a support for planning and critical thinking
Speaker Annamaria Bove, teacher and journalist, presented an approach in which AI does not replace the student, but acts as professional support for the teacher in the planning, assessment and feedback phases. The aim is not to have the machine do the work, but to educate students in conscious and responsible use, stimulating critical thinking. As emphasised during the meeting, AI “does not guarantee the truth” and can provide plausible but not necessarily true information: this is why it is essential to teach fact checking in schools.
Verification tools: NewsGuard and the “Crap Test”
During the webinar, operational tools for assessing the reliability of web sources were demonstrated:
- NewsGuard, a browser extension that assigns a “trustworthiness rating” to websites based on human journalistic criteria and not just algorithms.
- Crap Test, an acronym (Current, Relevant, Authoritative, Precise, Purposeful) that guides students through targeted questions to understand whether content is valid or not.
Case study: changes in Europe
A practical example involved a second-year class at a high school specialising in economics and social studies, engaged in a course on geohistory and civic education. Using the Inquiry methodology, the students analysed the environmental, political and demographic transformations of the continent. The crucial step was the comparison between the students' hypotheses and those generated by AI. The students then fact-checked the AI's answers, discovering inconsistencies or non-existent sources, thus strengthening their critical analysis skills.
Upcoming events
The “Augmented Teaching” course continues to accompany teachers towards a more equitable and innovative school. The next webinars scheduled are:
- Tuesday 17 March: Designing with AI. Strategies and tools for personalised learning with Gaetano Manzulli and Daniela Pieraccini.
- From 26 March: start of a second cycle dedicated to technologies for well-being and guidance.
“Artificial intelligence plus civic education equals conscious teaching,” concluded Annamaria Bove, reiterating that technology does not simplify teaching, but makes it more responsible.
